Chapter Nine

Krista noticed the hatchet-faced man moments after a siren broke out in the casino and people began moving toward the legendary slot machine. He was standing near a doorway, talking on a cell phone. As people shifted away from him, he looked nervous. It was the nervousness that brought him to Krista’s attention, that and the way his eyes darted to the exit closest to Krista, then to a second man fighting against the tide of people and heading her way. Hired muscle.

Both men fit the image of someone who’d be working for Alexi, though Krista only had to listen to her internal alarm to know that she needed to get out of the casino immediately. She scooped up her chips and made for the exit, with both men behind her, no longer bothering to hide the fact that they were in pursuit.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw Hatchet-face almost yelling into the phone. His behavior triggered a caution flag and she swerved at the last minute, avoiding the exit and trying to lose herself in the crowd. For the most part, the men hunting her had worked alone. But already she knew there were two today, and probably a third waiting outside to grab her.

Krista increased her pace until she spotted a larger group of people, visitors here for a convention probably. More women than men, most in their twenties and early thirties. She slipped in among them, smiling as though she recognized them from meetings that they were all attending. Several returned her smile.

The hired muscle passed, hurrying forward. Several minutes went by. When there was no sign of the hatchet-faced man, Krista grew uneasy, afraid that she’d let herself be trapped.

The group she’d hidden among began to splinter, drawn to different games. Krista knew that she needed to make her move soon. She was sorry now that she’d picked one of the smaller casinos. It limited the number of exits and increased the odds that she’d choose the wrong one.

Once again she looked around for the hatchet-faced man but didn’t find him. The siren and excitement surrounding Big Bob had stopped. Now there was a steady flow of people spreading out, returning to their gambling. Their renewed excitement and optimism pulsed through the casino, each thinking that today would be the day they hit the jackpot, too, and Krista felt buoyed by their hope.

She backtracked to the exit she’d originally intended to leave by. The odds suggested that her pursuers would have continued forward, thinking to get ahead of her.

There was no sign of the hatched-faced man or the hired muscle as Krista moved to join a small group of people and left the casino with them. Once outside, she headed for her car, merging continuously with clusters of people as she tried to hurry yet remain unnoticed.

Within a block she knew that she was being followed. Her instincts screamed for her to run and she didn’t try to argue with them. As
